What is Engineer Grade Reflective Tape?

As is common with many other products, the naming convention for reflective tape seems to have a bit of a marketing spin to it. Specifically, unless you are familiar with the product, the designation "engineer grade reflective tape" may not seem to be particularly informative about the quality of the product. Basically, what you should know about engineer grade reflective tape is that it is the most reasonably priced variation among the high quality reflective tapes.

Engineer grade reflective tape is produced with enclosed glass beads. These glass spheres reflect light back at its source regardless of the angle of approach due the the geometry of the sphere shaped objects. In order to be classified as engineer grade tape, the tape must meet the standards specified in ASTM D4956 type I, which was developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM develops internationally recognized standards for quality and safety.

This safety enhancing product is available in a variety of thicknesses, widths, and lengths. For general purpose use, a 5 mil thick engineer grade reflective tape is recommended by Koffler Sales. It is available in widths from 1" through 4" and in 30' and 150' roll lengths.

Marathon runners and triathletes knows that reflective tape is a must when competing in a race; which leads to a question of why haven’t more designers of triathlon courses realized the benefits of marking courses with it? Reflective tape provides vibrant daytime visibility. For races that will be completed while the sun is shining, glass bead or prism reflective tape is easy to see on course markers. For triathlons in which competitors will still on the course after sundown, a glow in the dark reflective tape such as Neon Brite is a good choice for course markings.

In many Ironman competitions, competitors are disqualified for not having at least seven strips of tape on various parts of their body. The reflective tape is so important that even if a competitor has a bodysuit full of glow sticks, they would still risk disqualification if their body were to be found absent of reflective tape. Triathletes are required to take these steps to ensure they are visible to other competitors, emergency personnel, and fans, but the triathlon course is often marked by a hard to locate pink sign here and a yellow sign there. Denny, a triathlon blogger, commented that he was disqualified from the 2010 South Davis Spring Triathlon because as he was running, he came to a yellow sign that said “RUN” with an arrow to the right. Denny is not the only one; in the Houston Marathon just last year, there was a group of walkers who confused the directional road signs at a merging point in the race. This terrible mistake cost them their finishing medals and t-shirts simply because the course was not well marked. Highly visible course markings near the end of the race are appreciated by Libby Hurley, of TogetherWeTri as she states, “When fatigue sets in and your decision making process begins to falters, the more time you have to react to an upcoming course direction change the better”. For triathletes, this fatigue usually begins to set in around dusk, as many of them are on the road part of the race. Installation

There are four things to remember when applying abrasive tape (specifically in reference to 3M non-skid tape):

Make sure the surface area is clean, dry and smooth.

The minimum application temperature in order to ensure proper bonding to the surface is 40°F (4°C).

After removing the liner from the pressure sensitive adhesive side of the tape or tread, be sure to minimize touching the adhesive surface to prevent contamination of the adhesive with oils and soils from the hands.

Make sure the surface fo the product is pressed or rolled firmly to provide optimum contact and bonding.

Removal

Anti-slip tape is very durable and long lasting. It is made to be long lasting so that neither you nor anyone else experiences an unsafe area of your home or company.

Unfortunately, anti-slip tape is a bit hard for one to remove. It is made to last for a long time, so once your need for the tape is over, the removal process will be a bit tricky.

Once the area has been bonded to the tape, the adhesives become strong and durable. The suggested way of removing such tape is to use a putty knife or some tool similar. You will want to place this tool underneath the edge of the tape or tread and attempt to pry upwards to lift up an edge. You will want to continue this step all around the edges of the tape or treat.

Next, take a pliers or another similar tool to grasp an edge of the tape and pull. You will want to pull the tape at a 180 degree angle back over the tape. This step will take much effort so beware.

Some remains of the tape may remain on the surface, but no worries, that can be taken off as well. What you will do is take a citrus base industrial cleaner chemical to soften the remains. You will want to rise and dry the area. And repeat that chemical cleaner if it is needed.

The process seems hard, but it is possible. Just remember to be careful using such tools!
